Marine Plywood
Strong, pliable and highly water-resistant
By far the strongest plywood available, marine ply comes with the added benefit of enhanced moisture and water resistance. As with all plywood, marine ply is an engineered wood, made by pressure-bonding together plies with adhesive. But in the case of marine plywood, the wood that is used is naturally water-resistant hardwoods, and the bonding agent is a very specific Type A phenolic adhesive.
So not only is marine ply very strong, it is also resistant to rot in high-moisture environments. Generally, marine ply is Grade A quality with an attractive commercial veneer face similar to meranti. It has no visible knots and few imperfections, and either side of the board is suitable to be outward facing.
Good To Use For
As marine ply can be immersed in water for extensive periods, it is the go-to choice for anything boat related. That’s however not all marine ply is good for. Because it is essentially waterproof, this plywood is suitable for any inside project where high moisture levels and condensation are the order of the day, such as bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms. It is also the wood to pick for outside build projects that will be exposed to water – from patio furniture, to fencing, doll’s and dog houses to skateboard ramps.
